What is a Configuration Model?

Configuration Management's purpose is to deliver a model of services, assets and the infrastructure by recording the relationships between configuration items (CI).  This model helps to 

• assess the impact and cause of incidents and problems
• assess the impact of proposed changes
• plan technology refresh and software upgrades

The power of the model is that includes the logical layer, not only the physical layer which can be discovered by tools. The proposed configuration model is an example and consists of a hierarchy covering IT Services, IT Systems, partner systems, contracts and their components. It is a proven and implemented approach.
